Microsoft IIS is the Web Server used to develop and deploy web application based on Microsoft Technologies like ASP.net and Classic ASP. If you are developer working on Microsoft Technologies you might need to install Microsoft IIS at some point. Please note all Windows 7 version not included Microsoft Soft IIS. Please click here to make sure Microsoft IIS is a part of your Windows  7 distribution.

Follow steps below for installation. You may need Windows 7 DVD between installation so keep it handy.

Click on Start -> Control Panel

Click on View by drop down link in the top-right corner and select Small Icons. The items list now changed to uncategorized list.

Click on Programs and Features

Now click on Turn Windows features on or off to get windows feature dialog box

Select required component from Windows  Features dialog box. Click on + to expand and view sub-features list.

Now windows installing Microsoft Windows for you. You will get “Please wait while Windows makes changes to features. This may take several minutes.” Just wait while windows completing installation.

Now type http://localhost/ in your favorite browser. You shoud see default IIS7 page.

Currently, i have no issue with my Dell Inspiron 1525 and it’s working  like a charm with Windows 7. However, some of the issue i had experienced before that i would like to share with readers.

Suddenly System Shutdown with Blue Screen

There are several reason that can cause your system to die suddenly with blue screen or without blue screen withing a second.  This issue is very wide and finding out why it is happening is extremely tough task. Here are some of the reason that can cause your pc to die suddenly.

1. RAM (Random Access Memory) failure
2. Hardware failure
3. Improper hardware driver installation
4. Software issue
5. Overheating  Processor

I called Dell toll free number for the assistance.  Dell representative asked  me to run diagnostic utility to check any possible hardware error and re-call them with error number and description if any.  I run diagnostic utility and there was no error found by utility. Dell utility took about an hour to check all hardware. Maximum time was taken by RAM check. Again, i called Dell with the utility result and they asked me check BIOS Version number.  The BIOS version i had was A13 that was outdated. The representative instructed me over phone how to download and update latest BIOS version A16.  After the BIOS upgrade i never experienced this issue again. The representative told me to check system for a week and also told me they will call me week after a week to check how system is working . As they promised, they called me after a week to check weather issue resolved or not.

RAM Upgrade

As warranty upgrade, i also called Dell customer care for RAM memory upgrade from 2GB to 4GB. The customer care representative said they don’t have compatible RAM(DDR II) for your laptop (Inspiron 1525). I argued representative about this because there was only 6 month left i bought laptop and it was within warranty. Same RAM version still available in the market without Dell but i could not upgrade from others becuase it  could void my laptop warranty.

Extended Warranty

I asked about warranty upgrade from Dell customer care and they said i need to pay around 7K for one year warranty upgrade which is costly in comparison to other manufacturers. So, i finally decided not to go with warranty upgrade.

You may find lower image resolution in the Opera 10 or newer version. First time i thought its just image loading issue and will fix over time but this was not the case. Opera introduced new feature that increase browsing speed significantly and gives you faster browsing experience. This technology called “Opera Turbo” by Opera Community. According to Opera, Opera Turbo is server-side optimization and compression technology that provides significant improvements in browsing speeds over limited-bandwidth connections by compressing network traffic. You have several advantage of this feature but some people may find this feature annoying because Opera Turbo decrease image quality and you may not see actual image on the website. But it play significant role when you don’t bother about images and love to read content or browsing on low bandwidth connection.

Advantage

• Decrease your net bill if you  are on pay per usage plan
• Faster browsing experience by compressing images and server side optimization

Opera proxy server do not handle secure connection. SSL connection completely bypass to protect user privacy.

How to Fix

Follow steps below to turn off opera turbo mode

• Click on bottom left turbo icon and select Configure Opera Turbo
• Select Turn off turbo and click on to implement change.
  
• Now refresh page. Image should load properly after disabling turbo mode. You can also choose automatic mode that allow opera to determine where to on/off turbo mode depend on network.

Word Press have missed schedule issue from 2.7 version onwards. Word Press post scheduling was working fine upto   2.6.5 version as many of users reported on web.  You can schedule wordpress post to publish on a specified time. but when time comes post can not publish and shows missed schedule in the admin area.  According to WP guys, this is not the issue that Word Press guys can fix. This issue comes when your web server can not properly execute wp-cron process.  New wordpress wp-cron method run wp-cron in separate process that rely on web server configuration. Everytime Word Press loads it looks for wp-cron whether it should be run or not based on the time it was last run.

Here are some reason that prevent Word Press to run wp-cron correctly.

• Server doesn’t have DNS, and so it can’t figure out who “example.com” is, even though it is *itself*.
• Server administrators, in a misguided attempt at security, have blocked “loopback” requests, so it can’t actually make a call back to itself.
• Server is running something called “mod_security” or similar, which actively blocks the call due to brain-dead configuration.

There is simple to complex workaround to solve this issue. This problem automatically fix when your server is configured to run wp-cron properly but it require server root access and extensive server administration knowledge. So server configuration method is simply not for everyone to use. There is simple workaround to fix this issue that force wordpress to run wp-cron using alternative method that does not rely on web server configuration. To fix the issue add below line in the wp-config.php file. This line can be add anywhere in the wp-config.php file.

define(‘ALTERNATE_WP_CRON’, true);

This should restore wordpress schedule functionality.

This error comes when you try to upload media file such as image, video by Wordpress browser uploader or flash uploader. Wordpress shows this error when temporary upload folder not configured in php.ini file. It is possible upload temp folder is configured but path entered does not exist in the file system. To fix the issue you just need to check and correct temporary path in php.ini file. If path is in-correct you need to correct folder path or if no folder path given then you need to set temporary path.

You can easily fix this by editing php.ini file. Most of the shared hosting provider now support custom php.ini per account. It means you can have you own php.ini and optimize php setting according to your need.

Apply following steps to complete this task.

1) Find out exact physical path of your account public_html folder. Create a text file and name it phpinfo.php. Add below lines in the file. Save file then upload file in the public_html folder of your server.

<?php phpinfo(); ?>

2) Run phpinfo.php file by pointing your browser to the file. http://www.yourdomain.com/phpinfo.php. Replace yourdomain.com with your actual domain  name.

3) Search for two entries _SERVER["SCRIPT_FILENAME"] and Loaded Configuration File. Note down value against these entries.

In my case value for above entries are

_SERVER["SCRIPT_FILENAME"]  -> /home/homefolder/public_html/phpinfo.php

Loaded Configuration File -> /etc/php/php.ini

4) If your hosting account support custom php.ini or you have server access then you can complete following steps otherwise you need to ask your hosting company to complete this for you.

If you have server command line access.

1. Create a temporary folder called “tmp” within your public_html folder from FTP. Now temporary folder path is /home/homefolder/public_html/tmp/
   
2. Login into the command prompt as server administrator.
3. Type below command and hit enter
4. $ sudo nano /etc/php/php.ini
5. It will open php.ini file in nano visual editor with root privileges. Enter root password if asked.
6. Find upload_tmp_dir and un-comment it if commented. “;” used for commenting purpose in php.ini. Simply remove this special character to un-comment line.
7. Change upload_tmp_dir value to /home/homefolder/public_html/tmp/. You line should appear similar to next line (8).
8. upload_tmp_dir = /home/homefolder/public_html/tmp/
9. Save php.ini file and restart apache.
10. Now again run phpinfo.php file in your browser. New value should appear in your php info setting.

If your host support custom php.ini

1. Create a temporary folder called “tmp” within your public_html folder from FTP. Now temporary folder path is /home/homefolder/public_html/tmp/
2. Create a text file called php.ini in your system and paste content in step (8) specified above.
3. Save file and upload to your public_html folder in your FTP.
4. Run phpinfo.php file in your browser. New value should appear in your php info setting.

Error should disappear now. However, in some cases you may still get same error. For those cases try removing trailing slash at the end of path. After the change path would be  /home/homefolder/public_html/tmp instead of /home/homefolder/public_html/tmp/

Firefox has three identified security loop holes known as MSFA 2010-01, 2010-02 and 2010-03 in the 3.5.x and 3.0.x Firefox browser versions. I usually format virus infected pen drive to ensure my windows system not infected with the infected pen drive.  Virus written for windows platform usually do not work within Linux platform so you can use infected pen drive without worry in the Linux system. Here i am showing you how you can format USB pen drive from graphical interface and command prompt.

Use below mentioned command to format USB pen drive.

Make sure USB pen is not mounted.

If mounted Click on Places > Computer > Select USB pen > Right click > Select Unmount Volume to unmount volume USB volume.

Check partition label using fdisk command or gnome graphical partition editor.

mkfs command

In my case USB partition label is /dev/sda1. Please check at your end using above method. Be careful using while using partition label, Wrong partition label can wipe out your entire hard disk or specific partition volume.

To format open terminal window and type the command

$ sudo mkfs.vfat /dev/sda1

For LINUX/EXT3 file system use below mentioned command

$ sudo mkfs.ext3 /dev/sda1

According to Microsoft this release cover seven privately reported vulnerabilities and one publicly disclosed vulnerability in Internet Explorer. These critical vulnerabilities can be dangerous.
